NYC OBSERVATION
"NYC Observation" is a creative reflection of my experience living in New York during the COVID-19 pandemic. As non-essential businesses closed and office workers transitioned to remote work in mid-March 2020, the streets of Midtown Manhattan - the nation's largest central business district - became desolate. Subway and bus ridership plummeted to less than 10% of pre-pandemic levels.
Despite these challenging circumstances, MTA continued to maintain nearly-normal levels of train service. However, as the world struggled to understand and respond to the pandemic, effective and accessible communication became critical.
Inspired by the "Safe Travel" campaign, I designed a mini collection that reflects the importance of social practices during the pandemic. An animated 3D version mask man aims to communicate in a more direct, engaging and playful way. I hope to evoke the spirit of New York and its inhabitants in the face of immense challenges.
The highly visible yellow and black oversized dress and puffer vest do not come across as a COVID-19 PSA, but rather as a fresh approach to conveying the importance of social practices.
